Frequently asked questions

What are the most popular excursions worth visiting first?
The main highlights are the trip to the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx in Cairo, plus a visit to Luxor (the City of the Living and the City of the Dead). Nature lovers shouldn't miss the boat trips to the Ras Mohammed reserve or to Giftun Island.
Is it safe to buy excursions on the street or online instead of through the tour operator?
Buying from local agencies is safe — programs are often higher quality, group sizes are smaller, and prices can be 1.5–2 times lower than at the hotel.
Do I need a visa for excursions to Cairo or Luxor?
Yes. If you arrived in Sharm El Sheikh on the "Sinai-only" stamp, a full visa ($25) is required for trips to Cairo or Luxor — you can get it at the airport or in advance online. In Hurghada the visa is issued on arrival.
How long does the trip to the Pyramids take?
From Hurghada the bus trip takes about 6–7 hours, from Sharm El Sheikh — about 7–8 hours. Air excursions are also available (~1 hour flight) and save you time and energy.
Which currency is best to bring with me?
For paying for the excursions themselves it's most convenient to use US dollars or euros. For small purchases (water, souvenirs, tips) it's handy to keep some Egyptian pounds.
Is my insurance valid during an excursion bought outside the hotel?
Your standard travel insurance is valid throughout Egypt regardless of where the excursion was bought. This is the official rule of insurance companies.
When is the best time to take historical excursions to avoid the heat?
The perfect window is October to April — temperatures in Luxor and Cairo are comfortable for long walks (+20… +25°C). In summer they can reach +45°C.

What travellers say

Thanks for the awesome tour! The crew was super! The atmosphere was calm and relaxed. We saw plenty of fish and even baby dolphins. The sea by the hotel is shallow, so thanks to the trip I really got to enjoy swimming.

Went with my 9-year-old son. We took the group trip — everything was organized quickly on site, our coordinator explained everything and off we went. The instructors were beyond praise: they split the group into faster and regular riders, kept an eye on everyone, answered questions, and even took photos)) On the way back from the bedouin hut, one of the guides took my son on his own quad. He was thrilled to ride with the guide rather than with mum) We rode for about an hour, which is more than enough to enjoy both the ride and the views!

Big thanks for the tour, my son and I really enjoyed it. There were a couple of small hiccups, but they were sorted out during the trip. I recommend everyone try the safari.

Excursions in Egypt: full guide to the best routes 2025–2026

Egypt is more than just "all inclusive" and the turquoise Red Sea. It is the world's largest open-air museum. While planning your holiday in Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh, be sure to leave time for the heritage of the pharaohs and for the natural reserves.

In this article we cover the most popular excursions in Egypt that everyone should consider.

Top 5 destinations: from pyramids to coral reefs

The choice of excursions depends on your resort, but there is a "gold standard" available to most travellers.

1. The Great Pyramids of Giza and Cairo

The country's calling card. The trip to the capital lets you see the only surviving wonder of the world and the treasures of Tutankhamun in the Egyptian National Museum.

  • For whom: History and antiquity lovers.
  • What's included: Pyramids, Sphinx, lunch, museum visit.

2. Luxor — the City of the Living and the Dead

Luxor is considered the largest open-air museum in the world. The density of monuments per square metre is off the charts.

  • Main sites: Karnak Temple, Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple and the Colossi of Memnon.

3. Sea trips and the Ras Mohammed reserve

If you're staying in Sharm El Sheikh, this one is a must. Incredible coral gardens and rare fish species await you.

  • Popular formats: Yacht trips, diving, snorkelling, a trip to Utopia Island (from Hurghada).

4. Quad-bike safari in the desert

Adrenaline and the colour of Bedouin villages. The best time is sunset, when the desert turns gold.

  • Includes: Sand racing, tea with the Bedouins, a camel ride.

5. Mount Moses and St Catherine's Monastery

A spiritual journey to the Sinai Peninsula. Pilgrims traditionally make a night-time ascent to greet the sunrise from the summit.

Useful tips before booking

To make sure your excursions in Egypt bring only joy, follow these rules:

  • Bring warm clothes. If you go to Cairo or on a safari in winter/spring, remember it can be cold in the desert and on air-conditioned buses.
  • Book in advance. Online booking is often 20–30% cheaper than buying the same tour at the hotel from a guide.
  • Dress code. When visiting temples and mosques shoulders and knees should be covered.

How much do excursions in Egypt cost?

Prices vary depending on the season and group composition:

  • Group tours: from \$25 (sea trips) to \$80 (Cairo / Luxor).
  • Private tours: from \$150 per car / guide.
